How can we know how wonderful each day will become? "New Directions" is a vocal group made up of men and women who in one way or another have come out of the Armed Forces damaged. Some are physically damaged and some are damaged in ways that are not so apparent.
They have been homeless—sometimes for over 20 years—but brought back to health with the love of music. They have become a wonderful group. Singing joyful and meaningful songs, a capella. They came to do a big benefit here in New York City at the High Line. Since they have never been to the great city before, I gave them a party here and introduced them to some New York writers and musicians.
James Gavin was here, and Frank Beacham and Sandi Bachom. They sang for us all and had a wonderful home-cooked meal. Morgan Ames, who has been coaching them, sang a new song she just co-wrote with Johnny Mandel. How can anything be wrong when you have great music and great food, and great people, just sharing and caring?
Some of my young friends volunteered to help with the clearing and serving (bless them). I went to bed at midnight, closing off my part of of bedroom and bath, and when I got up at 2:30 a.m. to go to the bathroom, I heard more happy talking. Back to bed I went.
This morning, I woke up to a clean apartment, and my home helper came to change my wound dressing and she made breakfast for me and Morgan. She is a blessing. We did my therapy, and now we are ready for the weekend. I will try to edit the video so you can see and hear just how wonderful life can be. They will be doing an album soon. I am looking forward to it.
Let me hear from you. Tell me how music has saved your life.
